Doricka L. Menefee-Ezemuoka, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Teacher Education and Administration
University of North Texas
How did being a CDAVE fellow impact your experience (s) as a graduate student?
“As a CDAVE fellow I was given the opportunity to network with other discourse analysis scholars doing the work that I wanted to do or was interested in doing. It really helped me be able to engage in conversations around questions I was having in my own understanding of discourse analysis. These interactions with other discourse scholars helped me to be able to understand how I can use discourse analysis in my own work. ”
What role does Discourse Analysis play in your current position?
“As an Assistant Professor, I am responsible for my own research agenda and having discourse analysis as a foundation helps me to think about research concepts differently. It also helps me to guide my graduate students who are doing or interested in doing discourse analysis research for their dissertations and other projects.”

How did being a CDAVE fellow impact your experience (s) as a graduate student?
“Being a CDAVE fellow enabled me to have unique access to spending time with Dr. Power-Carter, which was instrumental in shaping my dissertation research. The opportunities to build meaningful relationships with other CDAVE fellows, as well as participate in community events, were invaluable in providing a profound level of experiential learning that created a lens necessary to inform the work I was doing in my doctoral program. I will be forever grateful to the Center for Discourse Analysis and Video Ethnography, as it created a space conducive to engaging in a rigorous research process.”
What role does Discourse Analysis play in your current position?
“As a licensed professional counselor and consultant, Discourse Analysis continues to be instrumental in shaping my lens as a practitioner, as well as informs the language I use when working with clients, collaborating with other professionals, and when I facilitate trainings and webinars.
The theoretical underpinnings of Discourse Analysis, as well as the tools I acquired when utilizing MEDA as a methodology in my research, have deepened my understanding and ability to create individualized goals and objectives when working with clients, which enhances my work and increases the prognosis for successful outcomes.”
